about

Latest podcast spoken label interview is with the hard-hitting Matthew Nicholson.

Matthew is described as a ‘an honest, straight talking, rhyming bearded northerner originally from Leeds. He refuses to allow the conditioning of his Northern upbringing to dictate the direction of his writing and tears up the rule book to confront challenging subject matter. He delivers thought provoking, poignant and often heart breaking poetic narratives forged together with a touch of streetwise elegance in his own unique style. He is unapologetic and headstrong, confident and filled with insecurities. He is piecing himself back together after difficult circumstances led to him having a break down.

After a three year stay in the Outer Hebrides to recover, he recently returned to England with the aim of establishing himself on the poetry scene. He may have be forgiven for keeping his cards close to his chest and protecting himself from the world but he’s simply not made that way. He carves himself wide open and allows his heart to pour out onto the page.

He can often be found travelling around the UK performing wherever he is afforded the opportunity. He is currently developing a poetry play aimed around the life of a working class family. He is currentlyu building a database of poetry gigs in the UK with the intention to share the information with other poets and promoters to help in the process of securing work for others as well as himself - finally finding a use for the skills obtained from all those years wasted in office jobs.

He has ambitions so bold he dare not reveal them for fear of being ridiculed. He is humble, approachable, enthusiastic, optimistic, vulnerable, warm hearted, supportive and thankfully well on the road back to better health.

“He delivers a mixture of dark humour, philosophical musings, and concrete imagery with real venom” (Sabateur award winner Steve Nash)

“He delivered a professional polished set dealing with masculinity, suicide, feminism, death and the nightmare of ordering takeaway with mates in a moving sensitive and at times humorous way. My audience lapped him up. He touched many men in the audience. This has never happened before.”

(Myriam San Marco – Bournemouth Poet Laureate)

Matthew has performed alongside Dominic Berry, Jackie Hagan, Salena Godden, Matt Abbott, Genevieve Walsh, Victoria Garbutt, Ash Dickinson and Hollie McNish.

2016 - winner of The Stornoway Slam – the first poetry slam to take place in the Outer Hebrides. 2016 - Participant in the Scottish National Slam Championships in Glasgow.
